The Friends group came together in the Fall of 2010, soon after the opening of the new park. Comprised of dedicated neighbors from Pennsport, Queen Village, Society Hill, Bella Vista and across South Philadelphia, The Friends of Washington Avenue Green, acting as community advocates, have as their goal to bring fun and educational programming to this passive use park, and to help in regular cleanups and maintenance. They work under the auspices of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) which maintains the grounds and provides security.
Ongoing projects iinclude tours of the waterfront, bird watching and natural history programming for kids.
